I really liked Adrian’s comment in Chapter 5 about how “we only achieve goals in life by negotiating our way toward them: bulldozing our way doesn’t work,” (p. 64). This is a very powerful comment that makes a lot of sense.

In Chapter 6 he talks about finding clients and how designers often find clients by mistake or coincidence and that although it may be tempting to go after the “big name” clients who already have basic design sense they may already know who they want to design for them. He adds that it may be better to go after those who need “root-and-branch help.” He says that it will be more work but also more satisfying in the end. I like this idea because there a lot of smaller businesses out there with “bad” design and they ALL need our help. Those who are already very design oriented may have a much better presence already than many of these other businesses. I am often more consumed when I see “bad” design than good, so I think going after these types of clients will definitely be a rewarding experience and also if we really support the product the business sells or service they provide, it will be that much more rewarding to help them hopefully be seen by an attract more customers as a result of the new design.

In regards to Chapter 7, I feel that it is always important to remain professional with clients no matter what. I have noticed that a lot of students have been taken advantage of lately when working with clients, so that is one thing that I will keep in the front of my mind from now on. I am definitely one of those people who could get taken advantage of if I’m not careful because I always want to make everyone happy and sometimes have trouble saying no. I’m getting much better at this but it will be VERY important for me to make sure that I am always aware of the possibility that a client could take advantage of me, whether or not they consciously intend to.
